IFREAGOR
“We need only be afraid, we need not die, we need only live in the dark and be afraid”
Slaughter Prophet of Renfrano

Command Briefing
Once a colony world, Ifreagor now lies in the clutches of Chaos. In the north, zombies and plaguebearers populate the once-great city of Renfrano. In the south, war rages between multiple Chaos warbands. The populace as a whole largely worships Slaanesh, though the influence of Tzeentch extends its reach throughout every clique and faction. The failure of the Redemption Crusade to bring the Emperor’s Light back to the Ecclesiarchal stronghold of Ifreagor has left a stain on the honour of the sons of Dorn; one for which there will be vengeance.

THE STORY SO FAR…
Settled in M38.567 by an Imperial Rogue Trader by the name of Ifreagor Velterazzi, Ifreagor was once a prosperous colony world.
Geographically, the planet has a northern plate and a southern plate, creating a ring of mountain and volcano around the world’s equator. Much of this is below sea level, though some volcanic islands dot the ring of the equator. Landmasses arise at the North and South poles, far enough from the volcanic activity to allow for life air conditions. The wind currents of the planet tend to keep the sulphuric gas clouds from obscuring the light of the planet’s sun, Gorfear.
Due to the tilt of the planet’s axis and the polar settlements, the inhabitants of Ifreagor experience permanent night during the winter and permanent day during the summer.
With no complicated life forms to contend with, the settlers thrived and soon after settlement, cities arose at the two poles. The Velterazzi’s maintained contact between their holdings by way of their cruiser, The Shining Knife.
The Velterazzi’s carried with them a significant number of confessors and Ecclesiarchal attendants. When cities arose these church men and women were given prominent sites for the development of churches and cathedra to the most holy Emperor of mankind. Judgement fearing citizenry made for an excellent working class. The Velterazzi’s were not afraid to suggest that an infringement of the law could damn the soul.
A millenia passed before the arrival of the first black ships to Ifreagor. The Imperial Tithe was set low and passed without much incident. The Velterazzi’s proved effective rulers and secured their hold on the planet. 5 regiments of Ifreagorite Condottiero’s were founded and shipped off planet.
Ifreagor developed into a civilised and religious colony world. As can be a danger in the development of the religious element of society, the population became superstitious, conjuring bogeymen, monsters and wicked beings in their stories. These enemies were said to live on volcanic islands, below the ocean or even in the clouds. Their described shape, size and danger varied wildly. Abilities included shapeshifting, clawed attack, poisonous breath and possession. The confessors of the Imperial Creed sometimes punished the spreading of these tales and at other times encouraged it. Nothing focuses the mind quite like an enemy after all.
Disaster struck Ifreagor in M41.666, when the astropath aboard The Shining Knife succumbed to possession from a malevolent warp entity. The astropath contorted and split into a leering tear into the warp. Daemons entered the ship and a battle ensued that claimed the lives of all but one of the Velterazzi family. As the fighting raged, Celdario Velterazzi, sixth son of the governor, escaped to the planet’s southern pole. The defenders of the ship, unable to defeat their daemonic foes and unwilling to give up the ship, decided to steer for the surface. The Shining Knife was plunged into Mount Defedario, the planet’s most active and largest volcano, destroying the ship and causing a vast volcanic explosion.
The massive volcanic explosion produced a surge in gas and ash that breached the protections usually offered by wind currents, darkening the entire planet. This was felt worst in the north where winter had just set in.
Without The Shining Knife, Ifreagor’s poles were cut off from each other. In the north the Ecclesiarchal hierarchy took control. Religious emphasis led to a growth in the superstitious fears of the populace. The lack of political governance exacerbated the dark season’s spike in criminality. As the local law enforcement struggled to keep up, petty churchmen saw opportunities to advance their own agendas. Crimes were attributed to the supernatural instead of the banal. Enemies within the church accused each other of witchcraft and sorcery. Mobs were formed. Lynching’s started out first quietly but progressively became more overt. Preachers rose in power by their ability to sway the frightened crowds and equally fell prey to their inability to bring true safety, cast down by the next in the line of fiery orators.
A small child was found murdered in its bedroom, the wounds consistent with a savage fanged or clawed beast. Whether it was a misinterpreted crime, an accident or a genuine supernatural event was unknown. The facts of the matter were immediately obscured and lost. The populace reacted with panic. Their nightmares walked among them. The creatures of claw and shadow stalked the dark. Death waited around every corner, under every shade, beyond every door.
The hysteria that followed tore society apart. Thousands died in the confusion. Confessors were sacrificed to appease monsters in the dark.
The swell of terror rippled in the warp, sucking in energy and attracting nearby warp fiends. Malicious entities fed off the fear of the populace and clawed at the minds of the weak. Where or when the first daemon made the crossing is unclear but what is certain is that if the people of the north were mistaken in their fears at the beginning of their fall, they were not mistaken in the end. Shadowy clawed figures stalked the permanent dark. Many thousands more were slaughtered.
The carnage was only stabilised when Frater Lorica Terravuto gathered enough followers to his cause. Beneath the surface of the main city, Renfrano, he founded the Order of the Emperor’s flame. He had discovered that the creatures could not stand firelight, something he had stumbled upon when fleeing into a small chapel lit only by candle. Using the underground sub-tram system, he travelled the city collecting followers. The Order of the Emperor’s flame gave the Ifreagorites of the north hope. With their fear diminishing the daemons were driven back.
Losing their grip on reality the daemonic entities were forced to work together if they were to maintain control. Four daemons, known as the “Tall Ones”, identified a psychically gifted mind among the people. They lured the psyker away from its conclave of survivors. The “Tall Ones” ambushed the psyker, tortured him unrelentingly, but did not kill him. The pain and fear of the psyker attracted dark creatures from all over Renfrano. As they arrived to the torture the “tall ones”, swelled on the strength of the psyker’s energy, attacked and consumed the lesser entities. This continued for weeks.
The Order of the Emperor’s flame grew bold, believing their prayers were answered and the creatures of the dark almost defeated. Frater Lorica saw fit to retake the city’s largest cathedral, the Basilica of the Emperor Eternal. He led a vast procession from the underground to the streets. Frater Lorica entered the Basilica, his followers festooned with candles and torches
He was greeted by the psyker, an emaciated shell of a man. As Frater Lorica approached, the psyker began to whisper;
We need only be afraid, we need not die, only live in the dark and be afraid
Lorica replied, Come friend, there is no need to be afraid. We have light, we can drive back the dark.
At that, a mighty wind arose and screeched through the Basilica. The candles of the procession started to extinguish, those whose candles went out panicked. As fear rose, so too did the wind extinguishing yet more candles. From the darkness behind the altar strode the “Tall Ones”. They stretched to the height of the cathedral ceiling, a hundred feet at least. Frater Lorica held her torch against their advance.
Vile daemons, begone!
The “Tall Ones” made no reply. The first reached down and closed its fist on his torch, extinguishing it. Fear broke upon the procession like never before. The “Tall Ones” released their full power and swept aside every light before them. The Order of the Emperor’s flame collapsed, the “Tall Ones” massacred thousands. Many thousands more fled back to their hiding places in the sub-tram tunnels. Frater Lorica Terravuto was never seen again, her fate only speculated at, by those whose minds truly have sunk to despair.
In the years that followed the psyker, known to the locals as the Slaughterprophet, visited almost every enclave of Ifreagorites that lived in the city. He preached that they should stay afraid, push out those that spoke against the life of fear, and they would live. They need not be unhappy. Fear of the dark and sacrifice of the brave would keep the “Tall Ones” at bay. A cult of fear took hold, the “Tall Ones” became small deities of their darkened world.

In the south a different story unfolded. The permanent daylight of summer meant the ash and gas clouds from Mount Defedario dimmed the days but did not plunge the southern cities into pitch darkness. Celdario Velterazzi landed in the city of Yandanda. Unable to communicate with the north, Celdario consolidated his control of the south. He declared a monthly festival of light and openness to oppose the darkness. The Southern Ecclesiarchy joined in with his preparations. The festival provided distraction and hope to the uneasy people. The hosting of the festival would travel from city to city starting with Yandanda, then moving to Arlahatro, then Udine. The travelling festival created a friendly rivalry between the cities, each seeking to outstrip the last with shows of lights, fire and spectacles of theatre.
The theatrical performances, which centred thematically on openness, pushed the boundaries of what was acceptable or taboo in society. Celdario encouraged the revealing of secrets and rewarded those who came forward. He crafted a society built on transparency and acceptance. As more and more became acceptable, however, voices within the Ecclesiarchy started to voice concern for the moral virtue of the citizenry. The honesty of society was impressive, they agreed, but the acceptance of actions troubled them, surely transgression of rules must be punished. Celdario argued that punishment simply drove miscreants into the dark where their secrets festered and rotted. Acceptance would destroy the allure of the forbidden.
The cities’ friendly rivalry slowly transformed into bitter competition. The festivals grew ever more extravagant and it became apparent that the allure of the forbidden was not what stood at the heart of debauchery on Ifreagor. Every form of taboo, shocking and shameful action became fair game for the spectacles. The sexual displays and substance experiences were quickly moved through towards shows displaying cruelty, torture and death.
The Ecclesiarchy bided its time and marshalled its followers in secret. Generations passed and they did not fail to notice that Celdario Velterazzi did not age, if anything he grew in vigour with every passing year. They sent messages in secret out into the void and prayed that when deliverance came, they would be holding the blades.
As the 41st millennium drew to a close the opening of the Great Rift brought destruction to the Emperor’s faithful on Ifreagor. The 344th Festival of Light and Openness saw Celdario summon Slaanesh to reveal to them who now among their number held secrets. Sacrificing 666 virgin youths he created a warp gate wide enough for Slaanesh’s legions to come forth. Mounted Daemonettes galloped through the streets seeking out and slaying the followers of the Ecclesiarchy.
They were followed by Heretic Astartes. Emperor’s children of the Phoenicians Surgeons warband. They arrived with a mission from Slaanesh itself, to defeat the “Tall Ones”, in the north, so that Slaanesh could absorb their energies and gain the novel form of fear they had carved out on Ifreagor. When the Warlord Mechlorion stepped through the warpgate onto the planet, he was greeted by Celdario as a guest of honour.
Preparations were made for the invasion of the north. The Slaaneshi warriors had no idea what form the enemy would take or what their capabilities were, but were confident the favour of their master would overcome any foe.
With Warp energy flowing freely into the world it would not be long before Ifreagor became irrevocably corrupted and turned to a Daemon World.
As the warp storms from the great rift recede, however, not every candle in the north has gone out nor is every secret in the south revealed. For those who hold out for the Emperor’s light, Redemption comes from the heavens.

The Redemption Crusade’s arrival to Ifreagor’s orbit gave the last remaining Ecclesiarchal loyalists on the planet hope. Their hope was misplaced, misguided or both as the Crusade’s first attempt at landfall was dashed by the Emperor’s Children holding the Southern Continent. The Black Templars’ zeal and hatred of their fallen brethren was not enough to carry a direct assault to success.
Matters were made worse for the Emperor’s faithful by the deterioration of the situation on the Northern continent. Malkor, Master of the Undying Flesh, Plague caster of Nurgle, travelled to this continent. In the darkness he found the cults of fear built around worship of the “Tall Ones”. The cults pushed out the brave to be savaged by the Daemonic entities ruling the land and their fear fed those same entities. It was a simple Chaos worship, something that Malkor could appreciate, and he admired those non-aligned entities for assuming control of a populace in such a way. In it, Malkor saw an opportunity to supplant those creatures as the ruler of these cowed people. In the darkness of the sub-tram system, Malkor and the four Unfallen with him, travelled from station settlement to station settlement, preaching a new creed.

Prayer to the Grandfather for blessing
Accept you cannot escape death and toll the great bell the first time.
Let go of hope, for hope against death is only pain and toll the great bell a second time.
In letting go of hope, you let go of pain and receive the first blessing of Grandfather Nurgle. Toll the great bell a third time.
With your pain goes your fear, for in accepting death it holds no persuasion to change your actions. Toll the great bell a fourth time.
This is the second blessing of Grandfather Nurgle, be not afraid and toll the great bell a fifth time.
Thank Nurgle for your freedom from fear and pain, now receive his third blessing, rebirth in his image. Toll the great bell a sixth time.
Rejoice for you shall die and be reborn in his image. In jubilation toll the great bell a seventh time.
All across the continent people turned to the salvation offered by Malkor. Their hopes were realised when the first to receive the “blessings” of Nurgle were savaged by the “Tall Ones”. The Plague infected men and women indeed rose again in Nurgle’s image, as plague zombies. The practice of sacrificing the brave now worked against the “Tall Ones” for their cult had no one to stand against or dispute the creed of Malkor. As cultists flocked to receive the protections of Nurgle, the power of the “Tall Ones” waned. They were forced to seek out and attempt to kill Malkor.
The fateful confrontation came in the cavernous surrounds of Idrio Centrale, the main station of the sub-tram network. Here the Slaughterprophet heralded the arrival of the “Tall Ones” to Malkor and four of the Unfallen, Malkor’s chosen champions.

Malkor saw the emaciated man approach. He could feel the sorcery bound within the man’s body. The man was draped with slashed rags through which could be seen the scarification on his skin. Malkor knew this must be the Slaughterprophet his new followers spoke of. The herald of the “Tall Ones”.
The Slaughterprophet spoke, The Tall Ones come. Those who do not fear shall die. Those who do not worship shall be put in unspeakable and unending pain. Fear and you shall live.
I feel no pain, Malkor responded.
From behind the Slaughterprophet four shadows spread, rose along the great walls of the station and lifted into the air. They took shape as swirling black clouds; ethereal and malicious.
Malkor strode forward, muttering a curse of banishment, and struck his staff upon the ground. As the festering weapon cracked, Malkor was filled with a dreaded realisation. He had underestimated the power these beings still held. Their swollen warp forms travelled along the words of his curse and broke upon his mind like a tidal wave. He was flung back, his body convulsing, bursting, tearing apart. The Unfallen moved into action levelling a fusillade of bolter fire into the warp fiends. The exploding shells drove the “Tall Ones” back.
The cultists in the station wailed in terror for the promises of Malkor now seemed false, he could not overcome the power of the “Tall Ones”. Malkor, however wounded, was not dead. He called upon Nurgle to heal his broken body. Cultists gasped as his words became flesh, the sinews of his rotted form knitting themselves back together.
The Unfallen moved with the discipline of Astartes and the relentless determination for which the Death Guard had once been famed. Volley after volley of bolter fire kept the “Tall Ones” at bay, dispersing their gaseous forms.
Malkor stood, whole once more, to the exultation of his newfound followers. Stepping forward again he cast a curse on the “Tall Ones”, this time the nearest shadow creature burst. It reformed, but was much smaller.
The station shook to the impact of curses and blasts from warp and bolter as both sides fought to the death. For hours Malkor fended off the “Tall Ones” but he could not sustain the protection of the Unfallen and fight four daemons.
Malkor faltered and the “Tall Ones” sprung. They rushed forward and through one of the Unfallen, tearing the bloated Astartes limb from limb. The “Tall Ones” closed on Malkor, ready to feast upon him for all eternity. The remaining Unfallen drew their plague knives and charged, each offering up a prayer to the Lord of Plagues.
A ripple spread through the warp, lapping against the shores of the Garden of Nurgle.
The first “Tall One” made to strike Malkor. As it summoned its power, a creaking screech split the air, a rent in reality opened and a hand of indescribable putrefaction grasped the “Tall One” pulling it into the warp.
The second “Tall One” reared to destroy Malkor. A second screech, a second opening and a second hand dripping with every rot, bile and pus ever created tore the creature from reality.
Malkor, feeling the power of his God fill his body, spoke one more curse. From his mouth poured a torrent of steaming bile that burned the remaining “Tall Ones” from reality.
Cultists raced forward in jubilation to consume the holy bile. Hundreds died upon contact with the wretched liquid, pitching forward into it, only to stand once more, faces stretched into rigor mortis grimaces, reborn in Nurgle’s image.
Malkor waded through the celebrations to catch the Slaughterprophet, the “Tall Ones’” host. The emaciated man fled in terror before the plague caster. Malkor grasped the man’s rags, but the Slaughterprophet slipped from them, escaping into the dark tunnels.
The triumph of Malkor over the “Tall Ones” left him the undisputed ruler of the Northern continent and once more at the head of a significant cultist and zombie army. His ascension would not go unnoticed by either the Redemption Crusade or The Phoenician’s Surgeons.
Shortly after Malkor’s ascension, those few faithful to the Emperor’s cause left on Ifreagor from both North and South began to hear a voice calling them to salvation. It desired the faithful to make a place that is safe for the Crusade to land so that the work of the one true ruler of the Galaxy could proceed. From their dark tunnels and hidden chambers the faithful began moving towards the call of this voice. Across both continents pockets of the faithful encountered messengers claiming to be from the Lord of the Galaxy. The messengers came as triplets. The faithful were guided to the archipelago around Mount Defedario. Here, they met Fash’Hohne’rava, the leader of the triplet messengers. He instructed the faithful in the building of defences, landing zones and quarters for the coming Crusaders. When all was as he instructed the faithful attempted contact with the Crusade ships above.

Marshal, we have sighted the Death Guard moving South by flyer, their current trajectory will bring them to the Imperial conclave on the Defedario archipelago. Orders?
Ready our forces to strike, we will meet them head on.
Marshal Atreus pulled up a visual of the Archipelago.
May the Emperor guide our blades, may we be brought victory in his name, Atreus muttered.
The Thunderhawk roared through the ash clogged air. Inside, the jumps of turbulence caused pauldrons to clash where the Templars sat. They droned prayer as Chaplain Viribus walked up and down the centre of the craft. Viribus swung a thurible. Clouds of incense cascaded from it, filling the air with a sweet scent. The Templar prayer rose as they travelled. With a thud, the thunderhawk lurched, Viribus moved with the jump and continued his measured pace.
You are the Emperor’s chosen
His Angels of Death
You shall bring retribution to the traitor
Suffer not the traitor to live
Cleanse the Unclean
Suffer not the heretic to live
By your hand shall your soul be purified
I am an instrument of His will
Your enemies shall cower at your name
His Angels of Death
The engines changed to a higher whine. Over the vox the pilot announced their imminent arrival.
Prepare your souls, Brothers, for the work of the Emperor is for the strong and pure.
***
Marshall Atreus surveyed the preparations the locals had made. Some rudimentary trenchworks along the beaches. They had no fighters among them. It would be the Templars alone who had to carry out this dirty work.
From far off the sound of Thunderhawks once more swelled. Atreus looked out over the sea. A black fog drifted toward the land. He spat, That’s them.
Brother Eren, to the Crusader, we shall need its holy weapons.
The Templars readied themselves. The fog hummed as it came closer. The rising hum of billions of flies. They engulfed the Templars, crawling into every crack and crevice, though they found no way into the sealed power armour.
Atreus waited, allowing the flies to crawl over his armour, looking through the miasma for his foe. Their Thunderhawks roared somewhere in the blackness, he could hear the whine and thump as they touched down.
Viribus began a prayer, the litany of hate, his brothers taking it up with him.
Silhouettes moved in the dark. The flies grew more frenzied. As the shapes advanced they took distinct and disgusting form. Maggot infested, pus dripping Plague Marines. At their head came a figure whose flesh writhed with the vile blessings of the Plague God. Purple, swollen and sagging, the flesh of this man turned the stomach of even the purest Templar. His mouth yawned wide and from it spilled globs of corrosive bile. He spat curses at those in his path. Viribus sensed the churning of reality about the man.
Vilest of witches, a Plague Caster, he pri-voxed to Atreus.
He will perish upon my blade, Atreus promised.
Beside the putrid sorcerer strode a marine swelled with the bloat of Nurgle’s gifts. His power armour warped into symbols of his patron God. As he walked he tolled a mighty bell. Between the echoing dongs he chanted to his followers and they answered in turn.
Atreus drew his sword, holding it high above his head.
Draw your weapons, Brothers, the hour of the Emperor’s holy judgement is upon these filthy traitors! Now for Him, now for the vengeance of all mankind!
The Templar cheer rose, chainswords buzzed, power swords crackled and forth went the sons of Sigismund from the trenches.
Behind the infantry, Brother Eren called to his fellow crew from atop his Land Raider Crusader.
Now Brethren, forward unto glory!
The engine roared and the great tracks rumbled forward.
Give them a volley! he called to his gunners.
The Hurricane Bolters chattered thunder. Next the Assault cannon whirred into motion, rotating barrels building speed before the metal screech of 6,000 rounds a minute ripped through the air. Eren gave praise to the Emperor as he saw a Plague Marine’s head disintegrate in the storm.
The Plague Marines responded, ancient bolters rattling disciplined bursts into the charging Templars. The first line dropped under the hail. The Templars responded, adding their own bolter rounds to the Crusader’s.
Eren brought his pintle-mounted multi-melta around to face the enemy. Through the sight he witnessed the Plague Marines drawing knives. The Templar charge crashed upon them. Butcher’s work began. The Crusader halted. Over the vox, Brother Venrion called, Incoming!
A flash of red blinded Eren, then the crack lashed his ears. To his left the tank’s roof bore the orange scar of Lascannon fire. He refocused and scanned the battlefield. From the darkness lumbered a defiled Dreadnought. The great monstrosity clanked forward, clawed power fist reaching for the Crusader.
Give it fire! Damn it, Bring it down, bring it down! Eren roared.
Hurricanes reloading, Assault Cannon cooling, this one is yours, Brother
Eren gritted his teeth and levelled the multi-melta. One shot was the best he could hope for. Forward charged the Dreadnought. Fifty foot away.
Brother, fire!
Eren waited.
Twenty foot.
Eren!
He waited.
Five foot.
By the Emperor, Eren, melt the bastard!
The Dreadnought thrust its claw and clanged off the hull of the Crusader. Its head swung into the crosshairs.
Eren pulled the trigger.
The multi-melta screamed into life, a jet of pure heat energy lit the air, the Dreadnought’s head glowed, whited and fell away, followed by the torso within, and the sarcophagus. The whole infernal machine fell back from the Crusader, arms collapsing in on the molten ruin of the pilot and body.
The crew cheered and gave thanks to the Emperor and the Machine Spirit for their protection.
Eren scanned the battlefield once more. He sighted Marshall Atreus locked in combat with the enemy sorcerer. Blades swung and lightning crackled around them. The sorcerer was skilled in wielding his glaive, belying his foetid appearance. Atreus struck a blow, but the cut only relieved the sorcerer of a large pustule.
Eren felt his gut wrench at the sight of the sorcerer laughing as pus poured from his rent wound.
Atreus struck again, but the sorceror deftly switched blade hand and parried. The block caused Atreus to stumble back a step.
The sorceror open palm hit Atreus in the chest. A concussive blast smote the Marshall, knocking him from his feet. He flew back thumping into a dirt mound, clay flying from the impact.
By the Emperor, Eren whispered.
All across the battle line the Templars were falling. Their enemies absorbed blows, laughed off wounds and implacably cut through the black clad marines.
A rage rose in Eren. They were losing this day. Their purity was not enough, their temperance not enough, their reckoning not yet paid. Redemption was not for them this day. As the Templars fell, Chaplain Viribus alone cut through the Plague Marines, weathering blows as he went. Enemy after enemy died upon his Crozius. Hope that they could one day atone filled Eren.
The Marshall has fallen! Vengeance! he cried into the vox.
Ventrion gunned the engines and the Crusader rumbled forward.
All weapons, fire at will! Eren ordered.
The Hurricane Bolters and Assault loosed bursts into the enemy lines, felling Plague Marines left and right. Eren aimed for the sorceror.
For Atreus!
Eren gritted his teeth and squeezed the trigger. The jet of heat hit the sorceror before he could react, leaving him in a molten heap. Eren swivelled and fired on the Marine with the bell. The Hurricane Bolters added to the firestorm, shells exploding around and in the preacher. He fell, a charred husk.
A squad of Templars advanced alongside the Crusader. Their sergeant voxed Eren.
The Marshall and the Chaplain are out of action, you are in command, Brother Eren.
Our priority is the recovery of the Marshall, Chaplain and any gene-seed from fallen brethren. This battle is lost. We must salvage our losses and retreat, Eren said.
Yes, Brother-Commander, the sergeant replied.
The Hurricane Bolters drove the Plague Marines into the trenches for shelter. Using the covering fire, the Templars dragged the body of Atreus into the transport.
He lives, Ventrion reported, but needs an Apothecary.
Outside the firefight continued, Hurricane Bolters and Assault Cannon pulverising the trenchworks. Over the cacophony, the sound of Thunderhawks roared.
***
The Templars blasted off, abandoning the battlefield. Out of the trenches emerged the Plague Marines. Their losses were significant, none more so than Malkor, Master of the Undying Flesh, and Nowar, the Holy Leper.
Approaching the molten slag that was Malkor, one among them stepped forward. He began to scrape away the soft, melted flesh. Malkor’s eye rolled in its socket, fixing on the Plague Marine.
He lives! the marine shouted.
Praise was offered to Nurgle for the endurance of their leader.
They approached the charred body of Nowar. The same Plague Marine rolled the Chaos Lord onto his back. Nowar let out a sigh through cracked lips, and then rattled in a breath.
He endures! the marine shouted.
Great praise was offered to the Father of plagues for he had blessed them many times this day.
The Templars fell back to their landing site. Marshall Atreus ordered a general retreat from Ifreagor. The planet was lost and he did not have the resources to either stem the tide or carry out exterminatus. This failure would be a stain on the Redemption Crusade, one that would require significant holy work to expunge.
Whether Chaplain Viribus made it back to the Templar ships before they departed was unknown at this point. His disappearance in the battle with the Death Guard was neither noted nor explained in any official reports.
Following the Death Guard’s victory over the Black Templars any intention to explore the Islands of the Defedario Archipelago were truncated by the apparent eruption of the Volcano. Malkor led his Plague forces away from the eruption and toward the South. He wished to meet and talk with the leader of the Slaaneshi cult that dominated life in the South.
Upon arrival, Malkor was greeted as a guest of great esteem by the Pleasure seeking Celdario Velterazzi. The Plague sorcerer was brought to the palace in Yandanda and offered every delicacy and delight that the Southern continent could muster. Malkor was unimpressed by these displays but humoured his host for a time. Celdario was awaiting a third leader to join their talks.
Whether Malkor was surprised by the arrival of an emissary from a Tzeentchian cult on planet was not evident, however it could not be doubted that he was a little perturbed by the development. Celdario took great joy in watching the traditional Chaos rivals interact.

Celdario Velterazzi opened his self-titled ‘Conference of Chaos’.
Friends and followers of Chaotic worship, we have inherited this world from the Corpse-Emperor, may his reign grow shorter by the day. Here in the South I have built a society based on truth and openness. I have no ill feelings towards either of you, I simply wish this planet to be protected from the predations of Imperial Dogs. I invite each of you to speak your truth and so honour my society.
Just off Velterazzi’s shoulder stood another Chaos Space Marine clad in Turquoise power armour with a gold trim. He seemed to be Velterazzi’s bodyguard, unusual for a Space Marine to be a lowly guard for a mortal, even a mortal blessed by one of the Chaos Gods.
Velterazzi gestured to a messenger dressed in flowing light blue robes. He was a fair faced man with a calm demeanour.
I am a humble servant of Tzeentch. I have no love for the Imperial scum or any desire to challenge you or any other for control of this planet. I have things to attend to elsewhere. Therefore I am happy to leave this planet if you can offer me certain assurances
Will you be leaving with all your followers, friend? Forgive me, but your master has been known to have eyes and ears in every camp, on every planet and around every corner, Celdario responded.
I can assure you that all of my group will leave. Tzeentch has followers everywhere and I cannot speak for those outside of my group. I am willing to leave an ambassador in your court if you will allow it…
I would be honoured, to have an ambassador stay with me. I will show him or her the greatest delights the galaxy can offer. And what assurances do you require?
We have three wishes. First, that any followers of Tzeentch now and in the future will be not be harmed on this planet before they are given the free choice to relocate to another planet. Second, that you offer my group safe passage to the planet of our choosing. Third, that you send a message to the followers of Slaanesh on another planet for us.
Celdario was intrigued by this man’s wish to contact other followers of Slaanesh.
What do you wish to say to them? And where are they?
All in good time, and have you any message you wish to pass to my leader?
Celdario sat back and made a great show of thinking about the question.
I think that, seeing as yours is the only leader not to come in person, yours is the only leader to show less than full faith in this conference. I am disappointed by this. Before acquiescing to your requests, I wish to meet the leader of your group. And seeing as he finds the South too far to journey, perhaps I should journey to him. Yes, I wish to meet your leader at his place of dwelling
Celdario’s smile was razor thin. His eyes held a glinting mirth.
My leader did not travel as he is busy taking care of our society. As a leader yourself I am sure you recognise the immense responsibility he holds to the people following him. However if you wish to meet then I can convey this message.
I do wish to meet, messenger, I truly do. Have you anything you would like to add? If not, I will allow our other esteemed guest to speak.
I will convey your wish. I too would like to hear the words of the other.
Celdario gestured to the Plague Sorcerer.
Come friend, speak your truth
There is only one truth: all must rot. I wish no harm to any other God’s or their followers on this planet. I propose a pact between you and I, Prince of Pleasure. That we hold this world in halves between us but do not cross the horizon. Each will have their own Demesne, Malkor said,
And to rot all must once have been fresh and while it is we must savour it,” Celdario licked his lips, Plague Lord, your bargain pleases. If none who follow Nurgle come South then none who follow Slaanesh will venture north on one condition. I wish to know what has become of the Tall Ones, the mighty Daemons of the North?
They are no more. They do not stalk this planet or its mortals.
Celdario swooned back in his chair.
Oh lo, and I so wished to meet them. Tell me plague lord, is it possible? Are they gone forever or merely banished?
To meet them all you need do is fear, Prince of Pleasure.
Malkor chuckled.
One of my Unfallen could show you the way but, alas, I fear that would breach our pact
Perhaps one day he will gift me that sensation, Plague Lord. And perhaps I will return the favour, Celdario ran his tongue across his teeth, I’m not averse to reciprocating. Do you wish to ask or say anything of our emissary from the Changer of Ways?
Malkor turned to face the emissary, Who is your Lord?
My lord is as you have been told. The changer of Ways. The great god of change and ambition: Tzeentch
Malkor grew in stature. His stench rose and a hum filled the room, I have no desire to speak in riddles and rhymes. Who do you speak for?
You seem on edge, Malkor. I answered the question you asked and now I will do so again. I have been given the task to speak for all followers of Tzeentch on this world. We are led currently by Lord Fash’hohner’rava. He is sorry that he could not meet you himself.
Tell Lord Fash’hohner’rava that an Aeldari hunts him and his kind on this planet. It is wise for him to leave this place.
Malkor turned back to Celdario, Are we bound by this pact? My patience has grown short. My followers await. Other worlds yearn for my gifts and eternal life.
Celdario slumped into his chair, Yes, yes, our pact is sound. If Lord Fash’hohner’rava’s messenger is satisfied, I am, to conclude this disappointingly bloodless conference.
It would not be long before Velterazzi’s desire for violence would be fulfilled. After the departure of the attendees, a different meeting was convened, one of a far more judgemental nature.

Chaplain Viribus of the Black Templars stormed Velterazzi’s palace, smashing aside human guards and setting ablaze every object of heresy he laid eyes on. The Templar Chaplain had indeed remained on Ifreagor following the defeat on the Defedario Archipelago. He had followed the Death Guard to the Southern continent, where now, having failed to do so with his Battle-Brothers, Viribus would attempt to single-handedly cleanse this continent of the taint of Slaanesh, starting with the head of the snake.
Viribus’ arrival into Velterazzi’s throne room came as a terrible surprise for the Governor. Not to his newly acquired bodyguard though. Syrakul, the Hunted, stepped forward, knowing this was why he had been brought to this place. Slaanesh had foreseen this moment and he had the chance to gain great favour with the Dark Prince.
Syrakul strode forward to meet the Chaplain, raising his plasma pistol and preparing a string of curses to shout at the Corpse-Emperor’s lapdog. He flicked the switch on his pistol to increase the charge. The weapon hummed in response, this would be quick, Syrakul believed.
And it was; Syrakul pulled the trigger only for the supercharged pistol to explode in his hand. The curses he intended to say were never uttered as the burning corrosive plasma burned Syrakul’s face off and melted his throat. The Wolf of Horus crashed to the ground.
Viribus took little notice of the Chaos Space Marine once the pistol exploded. He simply made sure to crush the last of Syrakul’s head with a boot as he passed over the body.
The Black Templar Chaplain recanted the charges of treason, heresy and witchcraft as he strode to Celdario Velterazzi. The governor screeched until his voice broke and then whimpered as the Crozius Arcanum lifted, fell and imploded his skull.
Viribus wasted no time in moving on.
In the North, the Unfallen moved forward with Malkor’s vision for a continent of pestilence. In the capitol, Renfrano, they began work on two large projects. First, Uruk, Ur and Kutha crafted a great cauldron in the Gerantine slums. Into the cauldron they poured their waste, burst their boils and oozed the poisons from their bodies. Into the mix they added the dead, the decomposing corpses providing viscous volume to the pot of illness.
Meanwhile, Nippur, the Singer of Songs, travelled to the Carathan district for a special assignment given to him by Malkor. He chose a clear space between Carathan and Ostrogano and began a song. First low and mournful, rising to a shrill tune that carried across the city. All over the metropolis the shambling zombies creaked their stiffened necks in the direction of the song. Slowly they started to shamble once more, though now it was towards the Carathan clearing. As they went, they picked up anything that rotted, food, bodies, wilting flora. All became gifts for the singer, the enchanter of the undead. Slowly but surely a mound of decay was erected around Nippur. As the Undead continued to pile up their gifts, the singer clambered to the top of the pile, always continuing his sickly sweet tune.
Across hours, days and weeks the zombified residents of Renfrano heaped their gifts. In the heart of the mound the corpses degenerated into a soup that stewed and bubbled. On the seventh week of singing and rotting the inside of the mound started to swirl as though draining away. It did not drain though, simply swirled in an endless viscous gloop. At the edges of the swirling pool blistered hands emerged, grasping the bodies around. The hands heaved and Plague Bearers of Nurgle surfaced, dragging themselves from Nurgle’s garden. They pushed through the body mound and wriggled free, like maggots growing in a wound, gorging themselves on rotted flesh.
Ifreagor now was truly doomed. With rents in reality at both the North and South poles and daemons of Slaanesh and Nurgle entering realspace freely, it would take a sainted miracle to save the world from its warped fate.
And yet, a sliver of hope remained for the planet to retain its place in the material realm. The path was narrow, but one who could foresee the skeins of fate walked the surface of Ifreagor. Farseer Ahzuko had come to Ifreagor to hunt the Daemon Prince Sozaiyin. Seeing the Chaotic state of the planet he was on the cusp of leaving only that he sensed the actions of Viribus. In this mighty Space Marine, Ahzuko saw the chance to save this planet and the denial of such a prize to Chaos was a worthy cause to the wandering Farseer.
